Situation

Vanderlande (a subsidiary of Toyota Industries) is the global market leader for future-proof logistics automation at airports and warehouse distribution centers. Its baggage handling systems are capable of moving over four billion pieces of baggage around the world per year; more than 52 million parcels are sorted by its systems per day.

In 2021, DHL Atlanta created a large logistics center dubbed the “air hub” near the Atlanta airport, where they could collect parcels and then unload them into Vanderlande’s system. Vanderlande was tasked with transferring these parcels onto conveyor belts throughout its system and sorting them for delivery.

Vanderlande runs a complex operation where expensive and delicate equipment needs to be installed in phases. The logistical issues brought on by the pandemic greatly impacted the DHL Atlanta project from the steel/structural side. The delivery of their steel mezzanine and steel structure, which is needed to support Vanderlande’s equipment and mostly located on the mezzanine level within a customer’s warehouse, was delayed. Vanderlande schedules its manufacturing deliveries in a phased sequence based on when the equipment is needed, but once the schedule became delayed, they were overwhelmed with equipment onsite that was sitting unused. Vanderlande needed a short-term place to store this expensive equipment – and fast.

Solution:

Vanderlande’s warehouse needs didn’t meet the minimum leasing threshold requirements for most industrial owners. Vanderlande looked into a multitude of other options, from borrowing parking space at the airport, covering its equipment with tarps, and moving all of the equipment to its warehouses in Marietta, Georgia, before discovering Chunker, the marketplace for listing and procuring short-term warehouse space.Vanderlande’s warehouse needs didn’t meet the minimum leasing threshold requirements for most industrial owners. With Chunker, Vanderlande found the answer to its dilemma, and was quickly able to connect with warehouse users that had excess space that could be licensed temporarily.

“The process with Chunker was quick, efficient and affordable, saving my team from having to store our equipment at the Port of Savannah, which is extremely expensive. It cut down our additional expenses by 40-50 percent.”

Alexander Arias – Project Manager at Vanderlande

Results:

  • Many warehouse owners demand a one to two year lease agreement, a cost this project could not accept. Chunker’s flexible terms cut Vanderlande’s expenses by 40-50 percent
  • Added agility and flexibility to Vanderlande’s supply chain logistics
  • The online licensing process was simple and quick, enabling Vanderlande to access the warehouse in under a week and not have to put a hold on equipment deliveries
